When LCL Becomes FCL on Regional Cargo

How to think about the volume breakpoint where a full container may beat consolidation.

OPERATIONS NOTE / REVIEWED GUIDANCE

LCL is useful for smaller shipments, but at higher volumes the handling and consolidation charges can approach full-container economics.

Practical breakpoint

Around 12 to 15 CBM, compare a 20-foot or 40-foot FCL option before booking. The right choice still depends on destination, commodity, stackability and delivery timing.

What to check

  • 01Total CBM and actual weight.
  • 02Number of packages and whether cargo is stackable.
  • 03Destination handling charges and warehouse delivery needs.

This guidance is indicative. Carrier space, cutoffs, handling requirements and destination conditions should be confirmed for each movement.
